Safari's final straight

Date: 28-Sep-2014
The finish line celebrations on Kalbarri Foreshore were a mixture of happiness, relief and sadness for Australasian Safari competitors and organisers today. This group of 127 competitors are likely to be the last entrants to race the iconic motorsport event, a few of whom such as Bruce Garland, Steve Riley and Jim Cairns were also entrants in the first Safari in 1985.

Competitors race from desert to reef for Leg 6

Date: 26-Sep-2014
It was the picturesque Ningaloo Reef coast which formed the backdrop for Leg 6, with Australasian Safari competitors travelling south from Exmouth towards tonight’s host town of Carnarvon. The tropical coastal terrain and its sandy dunes brought some relief to competitors, after tackling the harsh inland desert for the past six days. Today’s leg was made up of three stages totalling 330 kilometres.

Leg 4 leaves Safari competitors exhausted

Date: 25-Sep-2014
The 352 kilometre Leg Four from Gascoyne Junction to Exmouth was described as ‘exhausting’ by many Australasian Safari competitors. The rocky mill track in the first stage had vehicles burning through tyres, and the overgrown bush and rough terrain on the second stage was gruelling enough to have competitors slump in a heap beside their vehicles once arriving back at the bivouac.
